Sun, Sun, Thank God We Got Some Sun!

A local company has a light-hearted ad campaign poking fun at some of our idiosyncrasies here in the Pacific Northwest: "wool socks and sandals guy"; "extraordinarily long coffee order girl"; and "blue tarp campers" - the die hard campers that stay in a downpour because they've draped a massive blue tarp over everything. Somehow the blue glow that it casts is supposed to make the rain all better. At one time or another, you could accuse us of being any of these folks (except the blue tarp camper - I just pitch the whole sloppy mess in the truck and come home). Well, yesterday we added another to our list: "50 degrees shorts guy/gal."

In our defense, it has been a really, really, really, really long time since we've seen the sun AND the temp was something that can be sort of, loosely, kind of, if you stretch it a bit, called warm. If you are from other parts of the country or other countries, let me explain that we kinda loose our minds here when this happens. I actually think there's an exception to our public indecency laws to account for this. We actually think this is summer-like weather and feel it's perfectly acceptable to strip down to, well, shorts. For girls, tanks and bikini tops are acceptable coverings.

I keep thinking our public officials will 'wake up' and change the laws. Whoa! That's just something we shouldn't have to see! But, think bigger...it can't be a good thing that all these stark white bodies are reflecting this much solar energy back into the sky! We may single-handedly be the driving force behind global warming up here! But we can't help ourselves, you see. So, if they changed the laws they would end up with jails full of practically naked, sun-drunk loonies. It's probably better to just let us be, wear sun glasses and look away quickly.

Here's my favorite sun-drunk looney:

She'll lie to you if you ask if she's cold, but bury herself in when you sit down. Her hands, arms, legs and feet as cold as the arctic shelf that recently fell off. But, as a parent you have to pick your battles. This wasn't one I was going to win. And, she loves the sun...why would I want to take this away from her?

Those that see the sun on a regular basis, please don't take it for granted! If you do, karma may bring you up here!

Okay, gotta go. It's going to be sunny again today!
