Random-ness

Here's a quizzer for you:

Q: What can clear a garden faster than a swarm of locusts?
A: Two nutbrown hares

Yes, the cute little bunnies that have nibbled our tulips to the ground have discovered the vast salad bar that we planted. Turns out that carrots aren't a bunny's favorite food. Nope, it's broccoli followed closely by cauliflower leaves. They cleaned 'em bare in no time flat. And, it's not just two nutbrown hares any longer. Butch saw the Mommy bunny leading her babies to the promised land this morning. So, we've made the tough decision to trap them and take them to Uncle Dan's house. Plenty to eat there, but not in a garden.

This is the cauliflower. Note the bite-mark on the leaf in the center. That, my friend, is what the bite of a bunny rabbit looks like when they tear off in a hurry.

This is - or should I say was - our broccoli. Beans in the background (which are really struggling with with all this rain) and leeks to the left. In the bunny world, these are tier 2 foods.

On a positive note, we went with the hanging Strawberry planter thing this year, so those bunnies couldn't reach them. Ha, HAH! Now if we can just outsmart the birds, we might just get a big red Strawberry to split three ways. Please keep your fingers crossed for us!

And on a completely different note...do you remember that "Slug Bug" game? No, we're not hitting our kid. We've morphed this into two similar games: Slug-Penske (aka Slugske) where we gently hit each other (or in Katie's case, she kicks the back of the seat) when we see a yellow Penske truck. I'm not sure how this started, but I'll bet you don't look at one of those yellow trucks quite the same again. And, an even better version of this game is "Slug-Bucks" where we gently hit each other whenever we spot a Starbucks. I think this started on a really boring road trip and when it really hit us just how many Starbucks stores there really are around here. Yeah, I know, you may never look at a Starbucks (or as Katie says "Star Box") the same way again either.

Punch buggies.... on the East coast. They are kiss buggies now and when someone spots one and says "kiss buggy" everyone else in the car has to kiss them (a transfer kiss, from lips to hand to hand or leg)

Great post Casey!

I had to laugh because JUST tonight I decided to let our cows in our yard (in which we also have our little 6x10 raised bed garden). Our yard hasn't been mowed in, oh....8 months and it needed just a little bit of a serious wack before we mowed. The cows took care of the half acre of grass and ripped up our cabbage, onions and strawberry plants. Viola! Free labor!

P.s...we do live out in the middle of nowhere so nobody was bothered by our overgrown yard. (:
